At the beginning of time, when humans began walking the earth, there was no money, law, religion, politics, and nationalities.

But did you know such a place still exists in this modern age? A city which has no racism, discrimination and most importantly - no creed!

It was about 50 years ago when Mirra Alfassa from the Sri Aurobindo Ashram decided to create such a place. Mirra, who is known to many as the Mother, dreamed of a township where people from all walks of life can live in harmony and be treated equally.

She named this unique city in Pondicherry as Auroville, which means 'city of dawn' in French. She was in her 90s when she worked with an architect to design the city which can accommodate 50,000 people from all around the world.

The city was finally inaugurated in 1968, with over 5,000 people joining from 124 countries. This town is not owned by any person, but by the Government of India’s Ministry of Human Resource Development.

Auroville has no currency, but the residents are given account numbers and transactions are made via 'aurocard', which works like a debit card. In return, the residents provide manpower to the foundation.

Healthcare facilities and electricity is given for free in this township. There are no school fees and children are allowed to study their subjects of interest at their own pace.

Now, Auroville is a self-sustaining city with people from all over the world, living together in peace. It is indeed a dream paradise for many.
