Malaysian rapper Yogi B has won an award for being an inspiration for rap music in Chennai, India.

The hip-hop star, whose real name is Yogeswaran Veerasingam, revealed this in a Facebook post earlier this morning.

"Nandri Behindwoods for this honour. Immensely grateful to have won the Gold Mic Award Icon of Inspiration for Rap Music.

"I dedicate this award to my global Tamil hip-hop family and my music fans worldwide," he wrote, in a post that at press time, has been shared more than 650 times and received hundreds of congratulatory comments.

The award function was held at the Kalaivanar Arangam in Chennai, yesterday.

Yogi B, 44, founded Poetic Ammunition (or PMO) in 1990, with his school friend Anand (aka McEna) in 1990, and when the latter left the group, it evolved into Poetic Ammo, consisting Yogi B, Chandrakumar Balakrishnan (aka Land Slyde), Nicholas Ong (aka Point Blanc), and Sashi Kumar Balakrishnan (aka C. Loco).

Although most of the group's songs were written in English, several tracks were also in Malay, Tamil and Cantonese.

In 2008, Yogi B collaborated with the duo Natchatra – rappers Dr Burn and Emcee Jesz – on the album Vallavan. It brought Tamil hip-hop to an international audience, and soon, fame in Kollywood.

In the past decade, Yogi B has sung alongside legend SP Balasubramaniam, rapped and appeared in a video clip with Vijay, and even rapped for an AR Rahman-composed Rajnikanth starrer, and it does not look like he's slowing down anytime soon.

Bravo for making Malaysians proud with your win Yogi B.

May you continue making great music and achieve greater heights!
