Superstar Rajinikanth's 'Darbar' is currently having a successful box office run and social media is abuzz with a claim that Thalaivar's character in the movie - Adiyta Arunachalam, is based on a real police officer who once terrorised the Mumbai underworld.

A recent Twitter thread by user Wolfrik, claimed that Adiyta's character in the AR Murugadoss-helmed movie was shaped after then Mumbai deputy commissioner YC Pawar, who battled notorious gangster Varadarajan Mudaliar aka Varda Bhai, in the early 1980s.

தர்பார் படத்தின் கதை வேறொன்றுமில்லை

Ulaganayagan Kamal Hassan's 1987 hit Nayagan, directed by Mani Ratnam was loosely based on the live of Varadarajan, who was originally from Tamil Nadu.

Varadarajan ran businesses worth crores, including smuggling, bootlegging, gambling, passport racketing, and the sex trade, in Mumbai.

Despite this, he was considered a 'saviour' by many in Mumbai, especially the slum dwellers.

According to Wolfrik, the tit-for-tat clash between Pawar and Varadarajan was well documented then.

"Darbar is based on what happened in Varadarajan's life and in the movie Nayagan," said the tweet.

When Pawar stepped up his offensive Varadarajan's criminal empire, the latter filed numerous private suits against the policeman, and the latter was forced to undergo humiliation as a result. His attempts were also sometimes thwarted by fellow policemen, who were under Varadarajan's payroll.

However, Pawar unrelentingly pursued the don, and as a result, most of Varadarajan's gang members were either eliminated or imprisoned. By the end of 1983, Varadarajan was forced to his abandon his Mumbai crime empire and flee to Tamil Nadu.

As for Pawar, he, just like Aditya's 'bad-cop' character in Darbar, sometimes reportedly defied the system to create his own, including working with criminals to get the job done.

So, have you watched Darbar? And, having read this, can you draw parallels between Pawar and Aditya?
