It’s not often that you get to see a classic movie reimagined in an even more classic dance form. But that’s exactly what’s going to be happening this coming weekend.

The Tanjai Kamalaa Indira Dance School (TKI), which focuses on the Tanjavur style of Bharatanatyam, will be staging an adaptation of the 1968 Tamil cinematic masterpiece, Thillana Mohanambal.

The original silver screen classic, starring legendary ‘Nadigar Thilagam’ Sivaji Ganesan and ‘Nattiya Peroli’ Padmini, portrayed the love that bloomed between a Bharatanatyam dancer and a Nadaswaram artist.

The movie captivated the hearts of many with its beautiful songs and brilliant dances. TKI adaptation will be a dance drama, conceptualised using the fine art of Bharatanatyam.

The show is a collaboration between TKI and NLFCS Tan Sri K.R. Soma Arts & Cultural Foundation, and comes after the success of Kannagi, Shiva Thandavam and Sri Valli Thirumanam.

TKI has an illustrious history and pedigree. Established by sisters Kamala and Indira, and inaugurated in 1966 by Mr. Azhli Arul Dass, a prominent dramatist well-known as the 'Protector of Drama', the dance school is a pioneer of Indian classical dance schools in Malaysia.

TKI has carved a niche among the Indian classical dance institutions in Malaysia by being the longest established Indian classical dance academy and in 2016, was entered in The Malaysia Book of Records for being the ‘Longest Operating Dance Training School in Malaysia’.

Thillana Mohanambal will be performed on 22 and 23rd June, this Saturday and Sunday and admission is free.

Will the love between a dancer and a musician survive amidst treachery and competition? Get ready to laugh, cry, and connect to this classic tale as story, acting, dance and song come together.

Date: 22nd & 23rd June 2019 (Saturday & Sunday)
Time: 7.30pm (Doors open from 6.30pm)
Venue: PJ Civic Centre (Dewan Sivik MBPJ), Jln Yong Shook  Lin, Petaling Jaya.
