  • 08 Aug 2019

Chennai has everything a traveler wants.

From good food to unique beaches and historical sites, it is no surprise Chennai is also the country's largest cultural, economic and educational centre of South India.

Aptly called the Detroit of India, as more than one-third of India's automobile industry is based in the city, Chennai is a must visit.

Here are some spots to head to if you're ever in Chennai.

1. Mahabalipuram

Also known as Mamallapuram, Mahabalipuram, is a town located between the Bay of Bengal and the Great Salt Lake. It's popular for its 7th and 8th century temples and monuments built by the Pallava dynasty. If you're a history buff, this site is a must visit.

2. Covelong Beach

Once upon a time this gorgeous beach was a port for ships. Today, it is filled with natural beauty and well known for watersports and windsurfing activities. The beach is also a favorite for those who enjoy fishing as a spot.

3. Thousand Lights Mosque

Considered one of India's biggest mosques, the Thousand Lights Mosque got its name because 1,000 oil lamps are lit in the mosque's hall. The mosque is open to the public from 5.30am to 9pm.

4. Sri Parthasarathy Temple

Dedicated to the Hindu god, Krishna, the Sri Parthasarathy Temple is famous for its high raised gopuram and beautifully carved sculptures. The temple is easy to spot and tourists will not be able to miss it even from a distant.

5. San Thome Church

Considered a relic of India's colonial past, the San Thome Church is situated on top of St Thomas' tomb. The church has its own museum, library and shops where you can purchase candles and flowers to pay your respects.

6. Fort St. George

This fort was bustling with British officials during the colonization of India. Today, it is home to a museum which houses silverware, coins, porcelain, documents, arms, and paintings of India's past. One of the tallest structures in India, the Flagstaff at the Fort, is also located here.

So the next time you're visiting Chennai, be sure to take your time to check out these locations we've listed for you.
