Try solving this simple mathematics equation: 8 ÷ 2(2+2) =?

What's your answer? 16 or 1? Mind you, if you don't get this right, you have been doing maths wrong your entire life.

Recently, the maths equation went viral on Twitter and most people came up with 1 as the answer. Which is incorrect!

In case you are wondering what's the real answer, here's a quick Maths lesson!

Usually, when solving a maths equation you will encounter operations like add (+), subtract (-), multiply (x), divide (÷), squaring (²), etc. To solve it, you need to follow the 'Order of Operations'. You can easily remember the order using the acronym BODMAS.

**B B**rackets first

**O O**rders (i.e. Powers and Square Roots, etc.)

**DM D**ivision and **M**ultiplication (left-to-right)

**AS A**ddition and **S**ubtraction (left-to-right)

Based on the order, in this equation, you need to solve the addtion inside the bracket first:

8 ÷ 2(2+2) = 8 ÷ 2 x 4

Now, we move on to the division and multiplication. Since both the operations rank equally, you need to complete the equation from the left side. So, that will give us:

8 ÷ 2 x 4 = 4 x 4 = 16

There you go. 16 is the answer.

Wasn't that simple?
