Hindus around the country are flocking to Murugan temples nationwide for Thaipusam today. Here are some images from the celebrations. 
 



 

Yearning for blessing

Devotees extend trays containing their offering to Lord Murugan, seated majestically on the newly-introduced golden chariot in Penang, as it makes it maiden voyage to the Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Hilltop Temple in Jalan Kebun Bunga, George Town.

Besides the golden chariot, Penang faithfuls also get to join the usual silver chariot procession, which also heads to the same destination. 

Lined up for offering

A Chinese devotee lights an incense on the hundreds of coconuts lined up on the streets (below), to be offered to Lord Murugan, as He makes his way to his abode, in his golden chariot. 

Apart from ethnic Hindus, and Indians, the Chinese also join this festive celebrations, nationwide, every year. Some even carry kavadis to pay penance to Lord Murugan.


 

Making way to the divine

Devotees, both young and old, make their way up the winding stairs of the Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Hilltop Temple in Penang, to worship Lord Murugan (above).

The temple, which ia also known as the 'Thaneer Malai' (Waterfall Hill) temple, has 513 stairs and a seven-storey, 21.6m-tall gopuram (main tower).

Dancing for the Lord

A couple of littel boys dancing the "Puli Aatam" (Tiger Dance), at the Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Hilltop Temple in Penang. 

The folk dance is native to Tamil Nadu, India, as is usually performed at temples during festive celebrations.
