A wedding is a tradition which is meant to bring two hearts together; 2 people taking the vow to be together for the rest of their life. However, the tradition has changed over time and has become a celebration to boast and please the crowd.

This is the story of Thanniya and Logiswaran, a newly married couple who went against all odds to have a simple wedding and a blessed marriage!

Thanniya met her husband in University Tungku Abdul Rahman (UTAR). They fell in love and was in a four and a half year relationship before deciding to tie the knot.

Thanniya works as a radio frequency engineer and her husband works as a risk and safety engineer. Their working life taught them the struggle of saving money, thus they mutually agreed to have a simple wedding which will not make them debtors.

Some couples nowadays take personal loans to fund their lavish wedding, however, struggle later on to pay for the loan and interest. Meanwhile, some even find it difficult to purchase a property due to this. Such wedding horror stories had convinced the couple to have a simple archanai wedding.

They did not depend on their parents for help and managed their expenses on their own. At the same time, they were also buying furniture and other necessities for their house, thus, they opt for a budget wedding.

They skipped engagement and also pre-wedding photo-shoot to cut their expenses, and decided to tie the knot on November 2017.

The couple took an easy decision to have a simple wedding, however, convincing their family was the other way around. Their family wanted a grand-lavish wedding!

On top of it, collecting moiyu (wedding gift in the form of money) caused another problem for the couples! Their parents saw the wedding as a return on their investment, whereby it’s finally time they collect the moiyu they gifted in other weddings. However, it’s the couple who had to bear all the cost of inviting hundreds of unknown strangers, which will result in spending for a bigger hall, more foods and so on.

Failing to convince the couple, their parents finally agreed in the end.

For the wedding, Thanniya and her husband spent about RM7,000 in total. Here’s the breakdown of the costs:

  • Food: RM1,800
  • Make-up: RM800
  • Photography: RM1,200
  • Saree: RM300
  • Jippa: RM160
  • Henna: RM60
  • Garland: RM340
  • Thali: RM1,000 (1/2 pound)
  • Temple: RM800
  • Card: RM540

After the wedding, the couple received backlash from the attendees saying the wedding was not good enough for them and it was too simple. The bride then showed her dissatisfaction on Facebook:

“We are not against grand weddings, but the society shouldn’t put pressure on a young couple who wants to keep the wedding simple. It’s not that we are not willing to, but we can’t afford to be debtors just to please the crowd for a day! People should understand what a marriage is all about!” says Thanniya.
