Stephen Hawking is a scientist, professor and author who was born in 8th January 1942. He was well known for his groundbreaking work in physics and cosmology, as well as his books which have helped to make science accessible to everyone. 

At age 21, he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease)- a disease where the nerves that controls the muscles starts to shut down. That's when the doctors gave him two and a half years to live.

While in hospital, Hawking shared a room with a boy suffering from leukaemia, which made him realise that what he has seemed to be more tolerable. That, together with several other incidents made him realize that he could do more things with the life he has, which helped him become the noted scientist he is today.

Hawking was studying cosmology at the University of Cambridge when he was diagnosed with ALS and realizing that he might not even live long enough to earn his PhD, he poured himself into non-stop work and research. 


In 1974, Hawking's research on black holes and radiation (Hawking Radiation) made him famous and he received the prestigious Albert Einstein Award. 

Later on, the physical control over his body reduced, where he was bound to use a wheelchair. Meanwhile, he lost his voice completely in 1985 and began communicating through a voice synthesizer.

Over the years, Stephen Hawking has written or co-written a total of 15 books. His 'A Brief History of Time' has sold over ten million copies and have been translated into over 40 languages.

A part of his life story was the subject of the 2014 film The Theory of Everything, starring Eddie Redmayne. 

Today, Stephen Hawking passed peacefully at the age of 76. This is indeed a great loss to science and us. May his soul rest in peace.
