Eating on banana leaves has a long-standing tradition of serving food dates back thousands of years in India.

Most people in down South consider banana leaves to be quite healthy and auspicious as they serve authentic south Indian spread on festivals and family get-togethers.

These thick leaves are big enough to serve a multi-course meal ranging from sambhar to chutneys. They can also be cut in different sizes and place them on platter of any size. 

Food served on banana leaves are enriched with several nutrients many of us didn't know about.

Anti-oxidant Rich

Banana leaves contain large amounts of polyphenols that are natural antioxidants found in many plant-based food and green tea. Food served on the banana leaves absorbs the polyphenols and believed to have anti-bacterial properties that can possibly kill the germs in food thereby preventing many lifestyle diseases.
 

Eco-Friendly

Banana leaves are much more eco-friendly as they decompose in a very short time, unlike most types of plastic that takes hundreds of years to biodegrade.  So, ditch those plastic disposable utensils for banana leaves.
 

Hygienic

Eating on a banana leaf is certainly a good idea and more hygienic when compared to other utensils. There are chances that traces of soap may still remain on the utensils even after washing and may contaminate our food.
 

Economical

We don't need to worry about spending those extra bucks on utensils. Having food on banana leaves is one of the most economical and inexpensive option.  Just rinse the leaves with water and get going. 
 

Flavorful

Banana leaves have a wax-like coating that prevents dirt and dust from sticking on the surface of leaves. When food is served hot on the leaves, the wax melts and adds subtle and earthy flavors to the dishes making it taste better.
 

Practical

Banana leaves are quite large and capable of holding an entire meal consists of several different components. They are also waterproof and can hold gravy preparations without getting soggy, thanks to their waxy coating.
 
The tradition of eating food on banana leaves is not only a pleasure to the eyes but to the enjoyment as well. So, the next time someone offers you a meal on a banana leaf, roll up your sleeves and dig right in!
