The upper layer of our skin, epidermis acts like a barrier from the harmful effects of the environment. However, with overexposure, the barrier begins to break down.

Major air pollutants that have adverse effects on the skin include the solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR), volatile organic compounds (VOC), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), nitrogen oxides (NO), particulate matter (PM), and cigarette smoke.

Pollution breaks down the collagen and the lipid layer on the skin, which impairs skin barrier's functions. It also makes the skin unhealthy by blocking the pores. They become congested, dehydrated and irritated which can lead to early skin ageing and inflammatory or allergic skin conditions like atopic dermatitis, urticaria, psoriasis rosacea or acne.

Here are some ways to ensure your skin stays healthy:

Cleansing

Cleansing is vital to remove the dirt and dust from the skin and pores. A two-step process has been shown to be more effective. First, use a cleansing oil or wipes to remove the dirt. Follow it up with washing the face with a gentle face wash.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants help to neutralise the free radical-induced damage done by pollution. Most fruits and vegetables have them, such as pomegranate, berries, carrots and green tea. Red wine have been shown to be loaded with polyphenol based antioxidants.

Hydration

Water is vital for the skin. Drinking warm water helps the body to absorb the water more effectively. Use serum or a moisturiser daily to hydrate the outer layer of the skin.

UV Protection

Always apply sunscreen to protect your skin from UV rays. Choose ones with a broad-spectrum coverage of at least SPF 30 regardless of the skin tone.
