Fire Razes Historic Penang Temple

A famous 133-year-old Taoist temple in George Town, Penang, was razed in a fire, last night.

The 8.45pm blaze started in what the authorities believe is a storage unit next to the place, known to locals as the Pek Kong Cheng Tua Pek Kong temple.

Firemen managed to bring the fire under control in about 15 minutes, but not before the inner sanctum, where the altar housing the statues were, was completely destroyed.

Penang Heritage Trust Council member Himanshu Bhatt likened the incident to Bukit Mertajam losing its own 'Notre Dame.'

He said the temple, dedicated to Taoist god of prosperity, Tua Pek Kong, has been a siginificant landmark in Bukit Mertajam, where the Hungry Ghost festival is celebrated on a grand scale, every year.

The video of the blaze is being circulated on social media.
