Indian authorities have arrested a Malaysian woman who tried to smuggle in RM1.47 million worth of gold into the country.

The 41-year-old was picked up at the Chennai International Airport last Sunday, after a tip-off, and customs officials found 12 gold bars weighing 6.5kgs, in her baggage.

She told the authorities that she was supposed to deliver the gold to an unknown person outside the airport.

Earlier this month, a Malaysian man was arrested at the same airport, for trying to smuggle diamonds worth RM1.34 million into the country.

The gems were concealed in his inner wear, as well as a multi-function cooker found in his checked-in luggage.

As with the recent case's modus operandi, this suspect was also supposed to deliver the diamonds to an unknown person, outside the airport.

In October last year, Indian authorities busted a gold smuggling racket from Malaysia, with the arrest of two persons at the Chennai International Airport.

The 6.95kg of gold was reportedly found concealed in electronic appliances such as microwaves and electric hotplates.
