Police have arrested two DAP assemblymen for alleged involvement in the now-defunct Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

The duo - Seremban Jaya assemblyman P Gunasekaran, and Gadek (Malacca) representative G Saminathan, were nabbed this morning and detained under laws of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma), according to reports.

Saminathan is also a Malacca exco member.

Under Sosma, a detainee can be held up to 28 days without trial.

Bukit Aman Special Branch's counter-terrorism chief DCP Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay told a press conference later that seven men, including the two politicians were arrested as they were believed to have attempted to revive the LTTE.

The men had been monitored since last November, he reportedly said.

LTTE is an organisation that waged a war in Sri Lanka in a bid to create an independent Tamil state in the north and east of the country. It is listed as a terrorist organisation in dozens of countries.

Meanwhile, a DAP MP has rubbished the arrests as a waste of police time and resources.

Klang lawmaker Charles Santiago said this is because there are neither LTTE networks in Malaysia, not attempts to revive or raise funds for the movement.

“I’m not sure what is the motivation behind their arrests.

“It definitely raises a lot of questions because, even in Sri Lanka, the movement does not exist,” Santiago was quoted saying by Free Malaysia Today (FMT).

He further questioned why LTTE members were not perceived as "freedom fighters" in Malaysia - the same way Palestinians are struggling against a powerful state robbing their livelihoods.

"There, the Israeli state goes after the Palestinians. Here, the Sri Lankan state goes after the Tamils. This is the only difference.

"Otherwise, the reality is the same. But because we live in Malaysia, with a racial lens, everything comes from a racial point of view," he was quoted.
