LTTE-Linked Arrests Due To Zakir Naik's Presence Here, Suggests DAP Man

LTTE-Linked-Arrests-Due-To-Zakir-Naik-s-Presence-Here-Suggests-DAP-Man

The recent arrest of individuals for alleged links with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) could be due to the presence of controversial preacher Zakir Naik here, a DAP Youth leader has suggested.

According to the wing's international secretary Satees Muniandy, the "LTTE bogeyman episode" would not have arisen without the arrival of Naik, and now the issue concerning the now-defunct Sri Lankan militant group had been blown out of proportion for "some other reasons."

"The move to neutralise the opposition to Zakir Naik could have activated the designs of the deep state and those powerful fugures bent on producing a particular outcome," Satees, who is also Bagan Dalam assemblyperson, was quoted saying by Free Malaysia Today (FMT).

Twelve men, including 3 DAP members, have thus far been charged with alleged links with the LTTE.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has defended the arrests, saying they were made according to the law, while Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has denied that the "deep state" was targeting DAP in the matter.

The LTTE was embroiled in a civil war with the Sri Lankan army for almost three decades, in its quest for an independent Tamil state in the north and east of the country.

It is listed as a terrorist organisation in dozens of countries. Its reign ended in 2009 when the group was defeated by the Sri Lankan military.

Meanwhile, Naik, who holds a permanent resident status in Malaysia, is wanted in India on money-laundering charges. He has denied the charges.

Mahathir has previously said that the Mumbai-born preacher would not get fair treatment if extradited to India.
