A Third Of All Women Are Abused In Their Lifetimes, Says UN

A-Third-Of-All-Women-Are-Abused-In-Their-Lifetimes-Says-UN

Did you know that a third of all women and girls experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetimes?

This staggering number was released by the United Nations (UN), in conjunction with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women today (Nov 25).

Here are some of the other equally shocking facts released by the UN:

  • One in two women killed worldwide in 2012 were killed by their partners or family, compared to 1 out of 20 men who were killed under similar circumstances.
  • Violence against women maims and kills as many women of reproductive age, as cancer, and causes more illness in women than road accidents and malaria combined.
  • Worldwide, almost 750 million women and girls alive today were married before their 18th birthday.
  • 200 million women and girls have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM).
  • 71% of all human trafficking victims worldwide are women and girls, and 3 out of 4 of them are sexually exploited.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in his message to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, called on governments, the private sector, civil society and people everywhere to take a firm stand against sexual violence and misogyny.

"We must show greater solidarity with survivors, advocates and women’s rights defenders.

"And we must promote women’s rights and equal opportunities.

"Together, we can – and must -- end rape and sexual assault of all kinds," he said.

The 2019 theme for the day is ‘Orange the World: Generation Equality Stands Against Rape’, which focuses on the issue of rape as a specific form of harm committed against women and girls in times of peace and war.

Beginning today, and for the upcoming two years, the UN chief’s UNiTe to End Violence against Women campaign will focus on the issue of rape.

During this period, several public events will be held, and iconic buildings and landmarks worldwide will be 'oranged' to recall the need for a violence-free future.
