'Comeback Queen' Kisona Wins First Badminton Gold At SEA Games!

  • 09 Dec 2019

Shuttler Kisona Selvaduray has won the country's first gold medal in badminton at the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines, by defeating Indonesian Ruselli Hartawan in the women's singles category.

The 21-year-old Seremban-born lass, who is ranked 104 in the women's singles world ranking, came from behind 20-22, 21-14, 21-13, to emerge victorious over Ruselli, who is ranked 37 in the same category.

Kisona's style of emerging victorious despite initially lagging behind has earned her the moniker 'comeback queen' on social media.

Youth and Sports minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman tweeted following her victory: "Congrats Kisona, comeback queen!! Only 21 and has won the singles gold medal. Congratulation! Malaysia Boleh."

Other netizens praised her using similar remarks.

Last September, Kisona won the Sydney International Tournament by defeating Japan's Shiori Ebihara 21-18, 21-13 in the women's singles final, in just 36 minutes.

Kisona only got the chance to join the SEA Games as a replacement to shuttler Goh Jin Wei, who had to withdraw from the tournament following a surgery.

Asked about the chance then, Kisona had said that she was "ready for any possibility".

At the time this article was written, Malaysia places fifth with 150 medals in the tournament, which goes on from Nov 30 to Dec 11. Of the tally, 43 are gold, 44 are silver, while the rest are bronze.

Congrats to Kisona on her tremendous victory and here's wishing her the best for more greatness to come!
