Covid-19: Tamil Nadu Going Under Lockdown!

  • 24 Mar 2020

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has recently announced Covid-19 as a global pandemic, with over 375,000 cases recorded so far, and the number expected to increase further.

As a means to control the spread of the deadly virus, countries like China and Italy have imposed a complete lockdown, while some countries - like Malaysia - have movement restrictions in place.

In the fight against the virus, India imposed travel restrictions to and from the country as well as a 'Janata curfew' for a day, in which main cities such as Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, and Hyderabad were ordered to go under lockdown.

So far, India has recorded almost 500 positive Covid-19 cases, far fewer than many other countries and more importantly, very few considering there are 1.4billion people in the country.

Tamil Nadu's chief minister Edappadi K.Palanisamy, however, announced that not only Chennai, but the entire Tamil Nadu will be under a complete lockdown starting from 6 PM on 24th March up to 31st March. The state will also enforce Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, which bans the assembly of four or more people in an area.

Essential commodities, private departments, and government services will continue as usual, and hotels will be allowed to function to accommodate the homeless.
