COVID-19: King, Queen Forego Royal Emoluments for 6 Months

  • 31 Mar 2020

The Royal couple has become the latest to join the nation in tightening its belt amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, has consented for the government to not pay His Majesty and his Queen, Royal Emoluments for six months, from March to August this year.

Comptroller of the Royal Household of Istana Negara, Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin, in a statement today, said the Royal couple has consented to the move to alleviate the government's burden in handling the COVID-19 pandemic, and also in line with the Cabinet's decision to cut the prime minister, deputy prime ministers and deputy ministers' salaries for two months, with the money channelled to the COVID-19 fund.

"This also reflects the concern of Their Majesties on the latest developments of the pandemic, and the country's financial situation," said Ahmad Fadil.

Last week, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced that he and his cabinet members have pledged to donate their two months' salary to the COVID-19 fund, launched earlier this month.

The COVID-19 outbreak has so far infected more than 2,600 people across the country, and killed 37.

The government has imposed Movement Control Order (MCO) until April to get the people to stay at home, and break the chain of infection.

Globally, there are 786,907 cases to date with 37,480 deaths from the pandemic.
