All Foreign Workers To Be Tested For COVID-19: Minister

  • 04 May 2020

All foreign workers will be subjected to mandatory COVID-19 tests, Putrajaya announced today.

Senior minister (security cluster) Ismail Sabri Yaakob, in his daily press briefing earlier today, said that the cost for the test will be borne by the foreigners' employers.

The preventive move, which involves foreign workers in all sectors, comes after 27 COVID-19 cases were detected among foreign workers at a construction site in Ampang recently.

The site has since been ordered to close by the Public Works Department.

"The tests will involve foreign workers in all sectors, be it construction, factories, commercial, or restaurants.

"They have to undergo swab tests, and the screening cost will be borne by their employers," said Ismail, adding that the tests will begin in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.

If any place is found to have COVID-19 cases among the employees, the government will proceed to shut it down immmediately, he warned.

After recording a dip in COVID-19 cases last week, the number spiked up again the last few days, up to three digits.

Yesterday, 122 new COVID-19 infections and 1 death, were recorded in Malaysia, bringing the total tally to 6,298 infected and 105 deaths, respectively.
