Former Kedah walker M Muniandy is now wheelchair-bound, due to a nerve problem which rendered his hands and legs paralysed.

The 32-year-old, who once dreamt of becoming a national walker, is now relying on his Socso allowance, just to get by every month.

According to The Star, Muniandy had represented Kedah in the National Schools Sports Council (MSSM) Championships, and featured in the 10,000m and 20,000m walk events at the Kedah Sukma (Malaysia Games) in 2006.

He even won the 10,000m walk at the Perak Open in 2007. In 2013, he was diagnosed with the nerve problem but he could still walk then.

It was over the past five years that Muniandy's condition took a turn for the worse, and for the last two years, he has been completely wheelchair-bound.

He is now being taken care of by his father M Maselan Mani, with the help of other six siblings.

"I was making progress in competitions and everything was going fine for me until 2013, when I was told I had the nerve problem.

"It ended my dreams in walking. It was a nightmare I never expected to suffer. I was a fit and healthy person," Muniandy was quoted telling the English daily.
