Police are hot on the trail of seven foreigners who fled a COVID-19 quarantine centre in Kuala Lumpur, said senior minister (security cluster) Ismail Sabri Yaakob today.

In his daily press briefing, Ismail also said the authorities will review the standard operating procedure (SOP) to see how the incident had occurred, and to prevent a recurrence.

The incident involves Indonesians and Bangladeshis who were housed at an education institution converted into a quarantine centre in Kuala Lumpur, after they were placed there with suspected COVID-19 patients from Selangor Mansion, Menara City One, and Kampung Baru.

The men are believed to have damaged the fence at the centre before fleeing, and their disappearance was only noticed about 10am on Monday after the doctors made their rounds checking the patients under quarantine.

This is not the first time someone has fled from the same centre. On May 2, a Bangladeshi man escaped from the same place, but was nabbed soon after.

Meanwhile, Free Malaysia Today reported that a group of 145 foreign workers at a construction site in Kuala Lumpur has gone into hiding after COVID-19 swab tests were carried out on them.

The group is said to have come into contact with workers confirmed infected with the virus at the Pavilion Embassy construction site.

According to the portal, the foreigners fled after their samples were taken and while the police were on their way to the site to cordon off the area.

Eleven of the suspects have already been arrested and a hunt is underway for the remaining suspects, a source told the portal.
