With many parents worried about the school reopening date fast approaching amid the COVID-19 outbreak, they can still opt to not send their children back to school.

However, parents will need to present an official letter to notify their childrens' school of the decision, The Star quoted the Education Ministry's deputy director-general (school operation sector) Adzman Talib as saying.

According to Adzman, students who suffer from health complications, such as asthma, and in need of dialysis, must keep their masks on throughout schooling hours.

Teachers will also have to keep on their masks when teaching at close proximity, except for when they are teaching in front of the class, he reportedly added during a webinar on the ministry's YouTube Channel yesterday.

School for students taking their major upper secondary examinations, namely Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), Sijil Vokasional Malaysia (SVM), Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM), and Sijil Tinggi Agama Malaysia (STAM), and other international examinations of the same level, reopened on June 24.

School for those in Lower Six, remove class (peralihan), as well as Forms 1 to 4, and Standards 5 and 6, will reopen on Wednesday, July 15, 2020, while for those in Standards 1 to 4, it is back to school on Wednesday, July 22.

Preschools and kindergartens have also welcomed students on July 1.

The Education Ministry has assured that schools have to practice strict standard operating procedures (SOPs), such as social distancing in and out of the classroom, wearing face masks and washing hands frequently.

Students and teachers alike have thus far embraced being back at school under the "new normal", well.

COVID-19 has so far infected 8,674 people in Malaysia, and killed 121.

The global infection and death tally has surpassed 11.9 million and 546,000, respectively.
