The police may soon start using taser guns when dealing with aggressive or amok persons.

Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador was quoted telling Bernama that the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) is also in the process of acquiring body cams for its personnel.

"PDRM does not want to shoot anyone, and wants to resolve issues without loss of life, such as when dealing with persons under the influence of drugs, who will be aggressive, so we want to only use taser guns to resolve these cases.

"Although the use of taser guns have been introduced before this, not many were provided to police staff, and most were of poor quality," Abdul Hamid said.

As such, PDRM is looking to acquiring "durable" taser guns like those used by the police in America, he added.

As for the body cams, it would be provided to police on patrol duty, especially in cities, the IGP said further.

For the record, taser guns are electroshock weapons which fire two small barbed darts which puncture a target's skin and remain attached to it, while a modulated electric current to the target to render him/her temporarily incapacitated to enable an arrest without incident.

Although it is marketed as a less-lethal device compared to a firearm, at least 49 people have reportedly died in the US, in 2018, after being shocked with a taser.
