This Math Whiz From Klang Got Accepted Into 10 Top Global Varsities!

Getting accepted into a university to pursue studies in a chosen field can be considered an achievement for many Indian youth from a low-income background.

However, Yugendran Rajaendran did not only get accepted by one university, but 10 prestigious global institutions!

Meet the 20-year-old Klang-born math wiz, who mastered percentages in mathematics aged just four - learning from his four elder sisters while they do their homework, and he subsequently achieved 11 A+ in his SPM, according to the Malay Mail.

Having attained his A-level certification from the Epsom College in Malaysia (ECM), Yugendran will be the flying to the US soon to pursue a double degree in Bioengineering and Mathematical and Computational Science at Stanford University on California.

For the record, Yugendran will be the only Malaysian in the Class of 2024 of the Stanford University, which is ranked second in the QS World University Ranking.

He told Malay Mail that he applied to 15 different top global universities and got accepted into 10, including Columbia University, Yale University, Carnegio Melon University, and King's College London, among others.

He chose Stanford, however, due to the university's state of the art bioengineering facilities, which he says could aid him in his efforts to become a medical scientist.

"During my A-levels, I got interested in bioengineering because it is related to cancer and stem cell research. It is really fascinating to me.

“Cancer is one of those diseases that we haven’t found a cure for yet and stem cell research shows promising results. I researched more about it and realised that this was one of the ways that I could contribute to the scientific community," Yugendran, who hopes to one day work with the Malaysian health ministry in local healthcare policymaking, told the portal.

If Yugendran's brilliance is notable, even more impressive the humble background of his family.

His father was  a motorcycle mechanic while his mother is a housewife. Yugendran is not the only high flyer in the family. Three of his elder sisters have gone on to pursue careers in medicine.

His stellar academic records have earned him a Tune Libra scholarship from the ECM Libra Foundation, which has recently launched an RM15 million Asean Scholarship programme to support 50 students across Asean nations.

Bravo Yugendran! He has indeed made the Indian community proud, and proved that familial background poses no hurdle to one's personal achievement.
