S Pavithra, of the "SuguPavithra" Youtube cooking duo, has been chosen as this year's Ipoh City icon.

The 28-year-old housewife was proclaimed the inaugural icon of the Perak's capital city, by the city Mayor Rumaizi Baharin @Md Daud at the city hall yesterday.

According to Rumaizi, Pavithra was chosen since her hometown was in Buntong, Ipoh, and because she has captured the hearts of many through her cooking videos.

He added that the Ipoh city council are also identifying 99 other individuals from various backgrounds, such as entrepreneurship, arts, civil service and teaching, who would be given the icon award in stages.

Speaking to reporters at the event, Pavithra thanked the council, as well as her fans, for making the award possible.

Just last week, the SuguPavithra YouTube channel was awarded the "Silver Play Button" for surpassing the 100,000 subscribers milestone.

The couple shot to fame during the Movement Control Order (MCO) enforced to contain the spread of the COVID-19 outbreak, back in March, and to date, their YouTube channel has almost 800,000 followers.

Their videos, showcasing the making of Indian dishes, was well received by all races, due to Pavithra's fluency in Malay, and even caught the attention of  Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
