Najib Guilty On All Seven Charges Related To SRC International

  • 28 Jul 2020

Former prime minister Najib Razak has been found guilty of all seven charges pertaining to the misappropriation of RM42 million belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd, a former subsidiary of the scandal-ridden 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

Kuala Lumpur High Court Judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali, in passing the judgment, said the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The seven charges the Pekan MP was convicted for include three counts of criminal breach of trust (CBT), three of money laundering, and one of abuse of power.

Najib, 67, is the first former premier of the country to have been tried and convicted of criminal charges over offences committed while in office.

Thousands of Najib's supporters, clad in Umno shirts and that of Barisan Nasional, started converging outside the court complex early in the morning. According to reports, some had been brought down all the way from Najib's constituency in Pekan.

Photos of the sea of supporters standing neck to neck, without observing social distancing amid the COVID-19 pandemic, is going viral on social media. At one juncture, the police even had to intervene and issue warnings for the supporters to abide by the standard operating procedures (SOPs) to avoid the spread of the disease.

Also present in the court with Najib was his former deputy Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is current Umno president. It is worth noting that Zahid himself is facing a barrage of corruption charges. Najib's children Mohd Nizar Najib, Riza Shahriz Abdul Aziz and Norashman Najib were also in court.

Najib's wife Rosmah Mansor, who is also facing a number of corruption charges herself, was not in court.

The charges against Najib were under various sections of the Penal Code and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Act 2009. The highest punishment he could be subjected to is a maximum of 20 years in jail, and a minimum fine of RM10,000, or up to five times the sum or value of the bribe, whichever is higher.

The sentencing has been adjourned to this afternoon.
