The government will reduce the ceiling price of three-ply face masks to below RM1.20 per unit, soon.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi told the Dewan Rakyat today that a decision on the matter will be made in a few days.

Currently, three-ply face masks cost RM1.50 each and was supposed to be lowered to RM1.20 a piece on August 15.

"After taking into account the feedback from people, we will further reduce the price RM1.20.

"We are going to reduce it from the proposed RM1.20 to a lower price and the decision will be made in a few days," The Star quoted him saying.

Alexander was answering a question from Khoo Poay Tiong (Pakatan Harapan-Kota Melaka) who had asked if the government would reduce the price of face masks since wearing them in public places have been made compulsory, and as such, the ruling would burden those in the B40 group.

To allow the lowering of retail price of the masks, the wholesale price would be brought down from the current RM1.45 per unit, to RM1.15 each from August 15, Alexander added.

The ruling to make the wearing of face masks in public places mandatory was made following a spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in the country, since late July.

So far, COVID-19 has infected 9,023 people in the country, and killed 125.

Globally, the virus has infected over 18.9 million people and more than 711,000 people have died from it.
