If you have been driving with an expired driving licence or road tax due to the Movement Control Order (MCO), better renew them before the August 31 deadline, before enforcement kicks in.

Road Transport Department (JPJ) director-general Shaharuddin Khalid was quoted telling The Star that this is because, at the moment, there is no further extension to the abeyance given for the renewals during the MCO.

According to him, from March 18 until June 14, a total of 2.11 million road tax documents, and 2.18 million driving licences were yet to be renewed.

"Enforcement will resume once the recovery MCO ends and if there is no further extension," he was quoted saying.

Motorists can perform their renewals at any of the 855 JPJ counters nationwide, open seven days a week, or do it online via MySikap and get the documents delivered to their homes from July 1, he added.

The country is currently under the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) until Aug 31, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is not known if there will be a further extensions to the restrictions, in light of the spike in coronavirus cases since July.

Checks conducted by The Star revealed a snaking queue outside the JPJ office in Bangi, with people rushing to renew their documents before the deadline.

So if you have been putting off renewing your licence or roadtax, it's about time to get them renewed before the law catches up with you!
